About the author

Mark Weston is a retired civil servant who worked for nearly 30 years in the Department of Employment and the Manpower Services Commission before starting a second career in pursuit of his interest in improving employment opportunities for disabled people. Since 1996 he has worked on several projects, mostly as a volunteer, for charities such as RADAR, the RNIB and Workable.

Between 1998 and 2000 he carried out a small research project, as part of a postgraduate MSc at City University, to investigate the subsequent employment experience of people who become profoundly deaf while they are in employment. He recorded interviews with 18 deafened people, and Working Without Hearing started as an edited account of the experiences described by nine of his interviewees who managed to find satisfactory solutions to the challenges posed by deafness in their employment.

He regards the book as work in progress and hopes to learn more from deafened readers' reactions to it. He will welcome feedback either by telephone (on 020 8878 1626 - voice or Typetalk) or by email (contributions@workingwithouthearing.com).

His next project is to raise funds for some action research to test ways of improving the provision and co-ordination of information and services to help deafened people succeed in their employment.
